Catastrophic Burns Resources

Although death from burns is relatively low in recent years due to excellent Burn Units in large cities, long term treatment can be very expensive and complicated.

The American Burn Association is an excellent resource to turn to in order to understand more about the medical and nursing care required for burn survivors.

Frequent long-term problems include:

  • Secondary injuries for the burn or inhalation injuries
  • Physical damages such as limited motion, sun exposure intolerance
  • Cognitive damages may result from the original trauma or for sequelae of the medical treatment or medications
  • Psychological damages form trauma, altered body image and developmental or puberty issues
  • Social damages related to education, employment and hobbies

The cost of future medical care includes reconstructive surgery and laser, rehabilitation, compression garments, aggressive physical and occupational therapy and psychological therapy.
