Mental Health Nurse

Mental health nurses are similar psychiatric nurses and work closely with individuals and families who have mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol addiction, personality disorders, eating disorders, and forms of dementia. They have specialized knowledge and training which makes them experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating psychiatric issues.

Mental health nurses work in psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals, and in the community providing an evaluation of mental health needs, administration of medications, coordinating services with the team of health professionals, and providing psychotherapy services.

Mental health nurse practitioners with a master’s degree have similar duties of a psychiatrist which can include diagnosing complex mental health issues, providing psychotherapy, and prescribing medications to patients.
