Psychiatric Nurse

Psychiatric nurses care for individuals and families of all ages in the community, prisons, or hospital/facility setting to support people with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol addiction, personality disorders, eating disorders, and forms of dementia.  Psych nurses provide assessment and care planning for patients using the nursing process and administer medications while monitoring patients through treatment.

Psychiatric nurses work within a team of psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers.  Depending on the area where the nurse works they could be supporting those withdrawing from drugs or alcohol, in behavioural health centers or seeing patients on a regular basis in an outpatient setting.

A psychiatric nurse is a registered who has obtained experience and specialized training in working with those with mental health issues.  They obtain high levels of compassion, patience and a non-judgemental approach and can become certified in psychiatric nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
