Nurse Practitioner Hospitalist
A hospitalist nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), who provides direct medical care to patients in a hospital setting. They work in collaboration with the hospital team and assess patients, order lab work, diagnostic tests and medications to be administered; they then analyze test results, diagnose health problems and create or adjust the plan of care. The hospitalist NP works closely with patients and their family members providing education and counseling on their health or how to manage health conditions.
The APRN must have a license as a registered nurse before pursuing education to become a nurse practitioner, which includes completing a master’s degree program. They can also choose to continue their education and earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
