Telemetry Nurse

A telemetry nurse is a specially trained nurse who cares for patients with cardiovascular disease and who have experienced cardiac events such as arrhythmias, myocardial infarction (heart attack), angina, heart failure, electrolyte imbalances, and acute coronary syndrome (ACS).   They are also trained in how to troubleshoot cardiac telemetry devices, sensors, and echocardiograms.

Telemetry is performed by attaching sensors to a patient’s chest which shows the rhythm and rate of the heart on a monitor usually located in a central area like a nursing station. The telemetry nurse then monitors the heart rhythm for abnormalities, irregularities, or changes and performs necessary interventions, such as medication administration.  A telemetry nurse recognizes when a patient is declining and knows the initial steps to take to help stabilize them.

Hospitals and other inpatient facilities employ telemetry nurses to monitor patients on cardiac, telemetry, step-down units, or other areas where a patient’s cardiac rhythm needs to be continuously monitored and/or treated.

Any registered nurse can receive the training necessary to become a telemetry nurse which includes advanced cardiac monitoring.
