Perioperative Nurse

Perioperative nurses are also referred to as surgical or operating room nurses, they provide pre, intra, and post-operative care. Perioperative nurses can fill the role of scrub, circulating, RN first assists, and post-anesthesia recovery in different settings such as hospital, surgical or day surgery center and work in many surgical subspecialties such as neurosurgery, cardiac, trauma, pediatric, oncology, general surgery, urology, orthopedics, plastics and reconstructive and transplant surgery.

A perioperative nurse has specialized training in many areas of the operating room and is able to review cases and provide testimony on all aspects of the standard of care in these areas including but not limited to: overall care of the patient before, during, and after surgery, safe equipment, and instrument use, sterile procedures, documentation of procedures and more. The OR nurse’s role is critical for safe patient care and their assessments are vital in stabilizing and discharging patients post-surgery.
