Nurse Practitioner Acute Care

An Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or ACNP is an advanced practice registered nurse that provides care to patients in acute care hospital settings and has a different role than a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

ACNPs care for patients 13 years and older who are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital for care. Responsibilities include diagnosing, ordering, and interpreting tests, developing treatment plans, monitoring hospital patients, developing discharge plans and follow-up care. In the US, 23 states have full practice authority, meaning they do not have to work under the supervision of a physician.

A nurse can become an ACNP by first becoming a registered nurse with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and then enrolling in a Nurse Practitioner Master’s program specializing in acute care; the program is typically completed in 2-3 years. Alternately, a nurse can take a Doctorate Nurse Practitioner Program, which would meet the requirement to become an NP with a doctorate degree.
