Surgical Nurse

A surgical nurse is a Registered Nurse who works on a floor in a hospital dedicated to the care of post-surgical patients. If a patient has an inpatient surgery, once they are stabilized and released from the recovery room, they will be brought to the surgical ward for pain management, wound care, physical therapy, and more.

Surgical nurses often manage pain, nausea, and provide IV fluids, antibiotics, and drain management. Post-surgical patients require close observation to ensure a smooth healing process. They will remain on the surgical floor until they are ready to be discharged home or to a rehab facility or skilled nursing facility for ongoing care.
