Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) are advanced practice registered nurses with additional training and education. They administer anesthesia to patients during surgical or diagnostic procedures and they can also provide emergency services and pain management. CRNAs assess patients prior to providing anesthesia, during the procedure, they monitor vital signs, and make adjustments to anesthesia if needed.
To become a CRNA a nurse must first obtain a bachelor’s degree and after becoming licensed and working for at least one year as a registered nurse, they can go on to obtain a master's in nurse anesthesia. Some may choose to continue on the reach the doctoral level and have a doctor of nurse anesthesia practice DNAP (Nurse Practitioner Schools, 2020).
