Continence Nurse
A continence nurse or advisor is a clinical nurse specialist who assesses and supports patients who have bladder or bowel problems such as incontinence. The nurse will take a history and perform tests such as bladder scan and physical assessment, and urine testing to determine if a patient has urinary incontinence and will determine if it is caused by coughing, laughing, sneezing (stress incontinence) or an overactive bladder.
The continence nurse will develop treatment plans such as a toileting schedule and advise a patient on ways to improve continence and quality of life. They usually see patients on an outpatient basis but may also consult with patients in hospital settings. A continence nurse also often becomes certified in wound and ostomy care broadening their scope and practicing in a variety of settings.
