Correctional Nurse

A correctional nurse cares for and provides treatment to inmates in correctional facilities and persons being held in jail.  The nurses in these facilities perform routine assessments and treatments along with emergency medical care and procedures.  Routine care for inmates could include managing pre-existing chronic medical conditions like hypertension, diabetes or seizure disorders, and any chronic illness that an inmate could develop with detained.  Also, nurses in these facilities will administer medication to those inmates that require it.

After becoming a registered nurse and gaining experience caring for patients, a correctional nurse can go on to receive additional training at a correctional facility and that includes training in areas such as safety and security.  A nurse can also become a Certified Correctional Health Professional, bypassing an exam.
