Family Nurse Practitioner

A Family nurse practitioner or FNP is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), who cares for patients across the life span, providing family-focused care.  The counsel and educate patients on preventing disease/illness, managing chronic health issues, and promoting health and wellness.  FNPs work in a variety of health settings but are most often seen in a clinic or doctor’s office, in some states FNPs can work autonomously without physician supervision.  They order lab or diagnostic testing, prescribe medications within their scope, assess symptoms, and diagnose health conditions.

An FNP must start with a license as a registered nurse and then go on to pursue a master’s degree with a focus on family health to become a family practice NP.
