Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse

A neonatal intensive care nurse or NICU nurse specializes in the care of newborns that are critically ill or who are born prematurely. Their duties include monitoring vital signs, administering medications, providing nutrition, and also, they play a critical role in monitoring their patients’ breathing and oxygenation, as most premature infants have poor lung development. These specialized nurses also have education focussed on the post-resuscitation care and pre-transport stabilization

They play an important role in providing emotional support to parents along with the education on how to provide care and support to their infant.

NICU registered nurses typically have a background in labor and delivery, pediatrics, or maternal-child nursing and obtain additional specialized training to prepare them for work in a NICU setting.
