A psychiatric nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse with additional education and training in psychiatric care. They must have a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on psychiatric healthcare.  They care for individuals, families, or groups who have mental health needs and are responsible for diagnosing and treating those with mental health disorders including prescribing medication, providing psychotherapy, and monitoring treatment.

Psychiatric NP’s treat those with disorders such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, dementia, and other mood or mental state altering disorder.  They can be seen working in areas such as long-term care facilities, correctional facilities, inpatient or outpatient psychiatric facilities, hospitals, and behavioral treatment centers.
