Palliative Nurse
Palliative care as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) is “an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with a life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical psychosocial and spiritual”.
A palliative nurse has a specialized body of knowledge and training surrounding symptom management in palliative patients throughout their journey through terminal illness and most importantly easing end-of-life care as much as possible. Palliative nurses work closely with patients and families in their homes, hospice settings, and may even liaise in hospital/clinic and residential care settings, with the goal of improving the quality of life for their patients.
Palliative nurses use resources, the interdisciplinary team such as social work, physical therapy, dietician, pharmacist, and they also work very closely with physicians. A palliative nurse helps educate patients to be able to better manage their symptoms, understand, and adhere to their medications while also providing reassurance and keeping patients and their families feeling safe and comfortable.
