Recovery Room or PACU Nurse
A recovery room nurse, more commonly known as a post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurse or perianesthesia nurse, is a nurse that cares for patients who have received sedation or anesthesia, whether it be general, local, or regional. They are responsible for ensuring patients wake up safely from anesthesia and observing and treating a patient post-operatively. A recovery room nurse monitors vital signs and a patient’s level of consciousness until the patient is stable and ready to return to the nursing ward or to be discharged home in the case of day surgery.
A PACU nurse is usually the first person a patient will see when they come out of the operating room and the nurse will be quick to manage any symptoms such as pain or discomfort, they will explain to patients where they are and re-orientate them post-anesthesia.
