School Nurse

A school nurse is responsible for assessing and determining if a higher level of care is necessary for sick or injured students. A nurse in this field can work with young children to young adults at the college/university level and can be found working in public or private schools, pre-schools, and summer camps. Other responsibilities can include administering medication, glucose monitoring, wound care for injured students, responding to emergencies, providing health education classes, and maintaining student health records.

Different states have differing requirements for a Registered Nurse to become a school nurse. For example, Arizona requires nurses to obtain a school nurse certificate issued by the Arizona Department of Education in California; the nurse must possess a credential in school nursing which requires 26 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree in nursing.

It is also possible for a registered nurse to become certified in school nursing through a specific combination of master’s degree programs.
